Nakanosawa Onsen is a historic hot spring that has been used as a therapeutic hot spring since 1751. The source gushed out from within Mount Adatara, and in 1885, local people drew hot water from the source deep in the mountains, creating the current hot spring district. Today, tours to visit the source are popular, and many people from around the world visit it. The owner of Bandai Nishimuraya is also a “yumamori” (hot spring guardian) who travels up the mountain several times a month to protect and manage the source. It is very difficult to manage the source during winter when it is snowing. The source, which boasts an output of approximately 13,400 liters per minute, is a highly acidic sulfur spring.The gas is removed and the spring water is stirred with wooden paddles over the course of the 6 km distance to the hot spring district. The spring water arrives at just the right temperature to flow into hot springs.
